GOLD KEY
DINNER A SUCCESS!

From
left - Geri Esposito, 12th Ward Leader; Zehy Jereis, City
Chairman; Jeanne Martinelli, Assistant City Chair; and Jim
Faulkner. Congressional Candidate and 3rd Ward Leader.
St. Andrews Golf Club in Hastings-on-Hudson
was the site of the Yonkers GOP’s 2006 Gold Key
Dinner. The event was successful in spite of the rain, with
over 200 people in attendance.
It was good to see all the candidates who turned out, as
well as our elected officials, but the night was truly
successful because of all the terrific people who attended.
The company and camaraderie were outstanding and the
excellent food rounded out a perfect evening. Our thanks to
City Chair Zehy Jereis and his Committee!
EDITOR’S NOTE: This issue of the
YONKERS REPUBLICAN
JOURNAL is intended
to give you some background on our candidates for state and
local office in this November’s election. When
possible, we have included the candidate’s website at
the end of the section.
John Faso for Governor
Growing up on Long
Island, John Faso learned early the values of family,
education and hard work that would stay with him for his
entire life.
His dad John was a small businessman running a tool rental
and television repair store, while his mother Frances
raised five children. John graduated from the prestigious
Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens. He graduated from
State University of New York at Brockport and earned his
law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1979,
working full-time and going to law school at night.
Elected to the State Assembly from Columbia County, Faso
quickly established himself as the leading fiscal
conservative in the state legislature, challenging the
prevailing tax, borrow and spend political culture in the
state. He frequently led floor debates against fiscal
gimmicks, such as raids on the state employee pension and
workers compensation funds. Along with his colleague,
then-Assemblyman George Pataki, Faso successfully sued
Governor Mario Cuomo to require him to submit budget
legislation on a timely basis.
Having earned a reputation as a fiscal and budget expert
capable of creative problem-solving, Faso was asked by then
Governor-elect George Pataki to chair his budget transition
team in 1994. In this capacity, he supervised the
state’s budget staff in drafting the initial Pataki
budget proposal. While there, Faso developed an economic
blueprint of tax and spending cuts that led to the first
reduction in state spending in decades, closing a $5
billion deficit. Because of that service, Faso was named
ranking Republican member of the Assembly Ways and Means
Committee by then Minority Leader Clarence Rappleyea.
During his service in the legislature, Faso promoted
legislation to foster job creation, curb government
spending, cut taxes, end parole for violent felons, and
prohibit questionable borrowing by the state. Faso was also
the original sponsor of charter school legislation in New
York State and was a leading figure in the passage of
Governor Pataki’s proposal in 1998 to create charter
schools in New York State. His leadership on such issues
led his colleagues to elect him Assembly Minority Leader in
1998.
Faso has been a consistent advocate to reform
Albany’s notoriously secretive budget process, and
adopt a constitutional amendment to permanently ban
back-door borrowing by state authorities and the
legislature without voter approval. He also advocated
budget reforms that would require the legislature to pass a
balanced budget and to clearly indicate the impact of
changes in the enacted budget from that originally proposed
by the Governor. Throughout his career, Faso has been an
advocate for reform in the redistricting process and a host
of other changes to open up New York’s political
system.
Faso left his post as Minority Leader to run for state
Comptroller in 2002 as the candidate of the Republican,
Conservative and Independence parties. Faso narrowly lost
that race in the closest statewide race in New York that
year.
In recognition for his outstanding public service and
commitment to fiscal responsibility, Faso received the
“Guardian of Small Business” award from the
National Federation of Independent Businesses in 1996, and
the “Distinguished Public Service” award from
the Nelson A. Rockefeller College of Public Affairs &
Policy in 1997.
Faso is a partner in the national law firm of Manatt,
Phelps & Phillips. He is also a board member of the
Buffalo Fiscal Stability Authority, on which he has served
since 2003. He lives in the Columbia County Village of
Kinderhook with his wife of 25 years Mary Frances, and
their two children Nicholas and Margaret.

C. SCOTT
VANDERHOEF FOR LT. GOVERNOR
C. Scott
Vanderhoef, was born in Suffern, New York and raised in
Blauvelt. He is a graduate of Tappan Zee High School.
Vanderhoef holds a bachelor's degree from Alfred University
and later earned his law degree from Pace University Law
School. Vanderhoef began his career in public service in
1972 serving Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller as a program
liaison to the Departments of Environmental Conservation,
Health, Parks and Recreation, Arts Council, Veteran Affairs
and Human Rights. He continued his work for the State under
Governor Malcolm Wilson and briefly under Governor Hugh
Carey. Vanderhoef also served as the State Project
Coordinator of the Child Medicaid Program for New York
City.

After working in Albany,
Vanderhoef returned to Rockland where he worked for
more than 15 years for the Ramapo Land Company, a land
management and development firm, rising to become the
company's president and CEO. He then practiced
Environmental and Real Property Law for the firm of
Birbrower, Montalbano, Condon and Frank PC. During
those years, he also served as Acting Village Justice
of Hillburn, sat on the Board of Trustees of St.
Thomas Aquinas College and served on the Board of
Education for the Ramapo Central School District,
where he was elected president.
In November, 1993 after campaigning on a platform of County
government reform and fiscal responsibility, Vanderhoef
unseated incumbent Democrat John T. Grant to become
Rockland County Executive. He is now serving in his fourth
term in the post.
Vanderhoef has worked tirelessly to create a streamlined,
more efficient and cost-effective government. His
leadership has led to a reduction in the County workforce
and the consolidation or elimination of one-third of all
County departments. The taxpayers of Rockland have seen the
benefit of Vanderhoef's reforms. County property taxes are
now more than 8% lower than when he took office. He
accomplished this goal despite population growth and while
increasing the quality and quantity of County services.
Rockland County is fiscally solid due to Vanderhoef's
strong management. He has maintained county debt at a very
low 7-percent of the constitutional debt limit while still
investing in needed capital infrastructure. He has also won
national recognition for financial and budget reporting.
Because of Vanderhoef's tough fiscal controls, Rockland has
quadrupled the county's financial reserves over the past
nine years and retained its A1 bond rating.
Committed to fostering a better business environment,
Vanderhoef's leadership has helped create nearly 20,000 new
private sector jobs over the past decade, making Rockland's
unemployment rate a full percent under that of New York
State. A pioneer in the fight against Medicaid fraud,
Vanderhoef was one of the leaders in the successful "Cap
Medicaid Now" effort that was ultimately adopted to help
counties limit rising costs. Because of Vanderhoef's
efforts, Rockland, in partnership with NYSAC, is the first
county in the nation to use IBM's VERIFY NY computer
program to detect fraud and is now leading the charge to
identify millions of dollars in potential Medicaid provider
fraud and recover taxpayer money.
Vanderhoef's perseverance in negotiations with the MTA to
close the "value gap" with commuters led improved services.
His tenure has also seen expanded health and mental health
services for residents and enhanced programs for its
children. More than 6,000 veterans now receive health
services from our newly expanded VA clinic, up from 300 in
1996 and the County has increased the number of day care
slots for working families.
Vanderhoef's desire to protect Rockland's environment
prompted him to create the County's first-ever Open Space
Preservation Program. This successful program has led to
the creation of five new parks, the preservation of two
farms and the addition of 632 acres of county parkland.
Because of Vanderhoef's leadership on public safety,
Rockland County is a recognized leader in disaster and
emergency preparedness and anti-terrorism planning.
Vanderhoef is a past president of the New York State
Association of County Executives, and has served on
numerous boards of charitable organizations including, the
United Way of Rockland, and the 21st Century Collaborative
for Children and Youth. He is a former adjunct professor in
environmental law at St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) and
has been a guest lecturer at Columbia University's School
of International and Public Affairs. Vanderhoef received an
honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Dominican College of
Blauvelt in 1995 and a Doctor of Humane Letters from STAC
in 1999.
Vanderhoef is the proud father of triplet daughters and
twin boys. He lives with his wife Colleen and his family in
Blauvelt.

PIRRO FOR ATTORNEY
GENERAL

A
champion of justice, an advocate for victims and a
pioneer for the rights of women, children and
families, Jeanine Pirro is uniquely qualified to
become New York State's next Attorney General.
As a young prosecutor in 1978, Jeanine headed one of the
first domestic violence units in the United States. It
became a national model, and was followed by one of the
first child abuse units. After she was elected
Westchester's first woman District Attorney in 1993 (having
being elected Westchester's first woman County Court judge
in 1990), Jeanine expanded these units into a Special
Prosecutions Division to investigate and prosecute, not
only cases of domestic violence and child abuse, but also
elder abuse and sex crimes.
Her High Technology Crimes Bureau attracted nationwide
attention for its undercover Internet pedophile stings,
targeting pedophiles and child pornographers using the
Internet to prey on children. The Bureau nabbed over 100
pedophiles with a 100% conviction rate; it also trained
personnel to create similar units across the country.
Jeanine opened the Westchester Intelligence Center in 1998,
the hub for law enforcement information in the region. On
September 11, 2001, the Westchester center became the
source of intelligence for the New York City Police
Department when the NYPD's center was disabled in the
attack on the World Trade Center.
In 2005 – the final year of her three four-year terms
as Westchester District Attorney – Jeanine exposed
and prosecuted a massive “medical mill” that
had issued over $12 million in phony medical insurance
claims; shut down pharmacies that were stealing over $4
million from our medical insurance system; and led two
investigations into why our government's child protective
system fails too often to shield children in its care from
harm.
For more than a year, Jeanine has led the fight in Albany
to enact legislation allowing the civil confinement of
violent sexual predators predisposed to molest, rape, or
kill again. She believes that New York families deserve the
same protection from convicted sex predators as families in
New Jersey, Massachusetts, Illinois, and California –
indeed, in 16 states and the District of Columbia.
A three-term District Attorney and past president of the
New York State District Attorneys Association, Jeanine will
create effective partnerships with New York's 62 District
Attorneys to ensure that all of New York State has the
resources to fight crime. Her preeminent standing among her
District Attorney colleagues was demonstrated on January
27, 2006, when the District Attorneys Association honored
Jeanine with its highest award: the Frank S. Hogan Award.

The
election season traditionally begins in the fall, but this
year is different which is why I am asking for your
help. The State Senate Minority has made my seat
their number one target, and will be investing a lot of
money in this campaign to defeat me at the polls in
November. It is only with your support that I can get
my message of no more taxes, creating jobs, and providing a
sound education for our children and a safe and secure
quality of life for the residents of my district. I thank
you in advance for your support as it is only with your

RICHARD
HOFFMAN FOR CONGRESS -
18th New York Congressional District

Richard Hoffman has distinguished himself
as a respected and dynamic leader in both the business
world and his community.
The son of a small businessman, Richard learned early on
the power of the entrepreneurial spirit. His mother
worked three jobs to make ends meet. He learned from
childhood the values of faith, family, country and hard
work.
Richard understands first-hand the burdens of rising taxes
levied by all levels of government and the difficulties of
raising a family while trying to afford living in our
area. He and his wife Vicki, live in the Lawrence
Park section of Yonkers where they are raising their three
young children.
![]()
Richard has the experience to advance the
pro-growth policies that create jobs and keep our economy
strong. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in
Business Finance from the University of Pittsburgh, Richard
distinguished himself in the finance community becoming a
bond trader for some of the top firms in the world
including Bankers Trust and Credit Suisse. After his
time as a bond trader, Richard managed $1.5 billion
high-quality fixed income portfolio representing investors
from all walks of life.
Today, Richard serves as President of the RAHoffman Group,
a business and corporate development consulting company
based in Westchester. His company teams with other
firms to provide strategic advice to businesses and
industries on financial and policy matters.
In the private sector, Richard invested in companies with
the best balance sheet and the best opportunities for
growth. In Congress, his bold vision is of a
government that operates in same way. One that finds
deficiencies, curbs wasteful practices and reins in out of
control spending.
A believer in greater local control over our education
policy, Richard took the lead with members of his community
to establish an after school program for junior high and
high school students. The program founded in 2005
helps area kids with homework, and remedial studies.
A tireless advocate for a strong national
defense and sound homeland security policy, Richard helped
organize events in support of our troops during the first
Gulf War. Today, he advocates a strong anti-terror
posture and immigration reform that protects our economy
and strengthens our borders.
His commitment and passion for his community has seen him
take leadership roles in a variety of areas. Richard
regularly teaches Sunday school and is active in his church
community. In 2005 following the devastation of
Hurricane Katrina, Richard organized a successful community
clothing drive for the victims of the Gulf Coast. He
drove the truck himself down to Louisiana and Alabama to
assist relief workers in distributing the donated
provisions.
![]()
![]()
![]()
Richard is not a newcomer to the political
arena. He worked in the state of Pennsylvania for the
’92 Bush for President Campaign and subsequently has
advised and assisted campaigns on all levels of
government. In 2004 he was named Executive Director
of the Yonkers City Republican Committee and also has
served as President of his local Republican club.
In 2004 he ran a substantive and hard-fought race against
Congresswoman Nita Lowey in the 18th District.
Promising to bring pro-active representation to the people
of his district, Richard’s campaign garnered the
respect of residents from across the political spectrum.
When elected to Congress, Richard’s commitment is to
ensure that Westchester and Rockland are affordable,
competitive, safe and secure. His vision is of a
government that is truly innovative and genuinely
responsive to the people it serves.
Richard has a Bold Vision to meet the challenges of
tomorrow. www.hoffmanforcongress.com
JOHN SPENCER FOR U. S. SENATE

The battle for New
York’s United States Senate seat is also a
battle for the soul of the Republican and Conservative
parties. It is time to elect a Senator who
stands for our conservative principles and reject
RINOs (Republicans in Name Only) and Hillary-lite
candidates who agree with Senator Clinton on important
issues like life, the Second Amendment, protecting
marriage, immigration control, cutting taxes and
winning the war on terror.
John Spencer
is the one and only true conservative in this
race.
A breath of fresh air to politics, in 1996, Spencer shocked
the “experts” became the Republican mayor of
overwhelmingly Democrat Yonkers, New York’s
fourth-largest city. As mayor, he stood up for conservative
principles and what was right for the people he
represented.
What others thought of as impossible, he saw as challenges
to overcome. He took a stagnant city in decline and changed
its image to a city of progress. He revitalized the
waterfront, cut taxes that others said couldn't be cut and
improved services. John Spencer is proud to run on his life
record and on his record as a big-city mayor who pulled a
city out from under a state Financial Control Board and
federal oversight of its court-ordered desegregation.
At the height of the Vietnam War, when others were avoiding
the draft, John Spencer chose to enlist in the United
States Army to serve his country. The awesome
responsibility of leading men whose very survival depended
on him as a young Infantry Lt., shaped and molded him into
the leader he is today.
A principled
conservative who can win.
As a candidate and public servant, Spencer has been proud
to run and win with the Conservative Party of New
York’s endorsement. John Spencer has always
clearly and unashamedly taken a principled stand for his
pro-life, pro-marriage, pro-growth, pro-2nd amendment, and
anti-illegal immigration positions. As our candidate
for the U.S. Senate, Spencer will provide a clear contrast
to Senator Clinton’s views. If we nominate a
Republican who agrees with Senator Clinton on these issues,
we are destined to lose.
As a self-made man, John Spencer worked his way up from
construction worker to real estate management and knows
firsthand the challenges that working class families face
to make ends meet. He found his purpose in fatherhood and
was not afraid to roll up his sleeves and work hard to
provide for his family. His devotion to every aspect of his
older children's lives, Jennifer and John, led to his
active participation in the community. This was the
beginning of his involvement in politics as a vehicle for
social change. Since remarried, John and his wife Kathy are
the proud parents of three young children, Kaitlyn, Patrick
and James.
