JOHN FASO WINS CONVENTION VOTE

pastedGraphic
Scott Vanderhoef & John Faso with Yonkers Mayor Philip Amicone

Hempstead, NY With the majority of the delegates’ votes for governor going to John Faso and Scott Vanderhoef for Lieutenant Governor, the New York State Republican Party brought its Convention to a close. Faso/Vanderhoef received 59.5 % of the weighted vote and Weld/Patterson received 40.5 %. Faso has already received the Conservative nomination and is ensured the Conservative line on the ballot as well.
Statewide Republican officials, including Gov. Pataki and state Republican Chairman Steve Minarik backed Weld and put pressure on delegates to vote for Weld. Some seemed to yield to the pressure while others stood fast, resulting in the Faso victory. Bill Weld has now withdrawn from the race and thrown his support to John Faso.
Former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer is the party’s choice for U. S. Senator, receiving 63.5 per cent of the delegates’ weighted vote while K.T. McFarland received the remaining 36.5 per cent It appears that McFarland intends to petition to force a primary election for the Senate seat..
Former Westchester D. A. Jeanine Pirro received the unanimous backing of the party for Attorney General and J. Christopher Callaghan was unanimously nominated for Comptroller.

Republican Unity June 2006
Fellow Republicans,

You have heard me talk at length about the rebirth of Yonkers and its restoration to a place of greatness in New York State, as well as the new optimism enveloping our residents and many neighborhoods. Just as we are seeing our city make tremendous economic and social progress, a new age of Republican unity is beginning to emerge in Yonkers, which I believe can only mean greater triumphs for Yonkers in the future.

For the first time in a long time, the divisiveness of the past is yielding to an era of cooperation, respect and mutual accomplishment on behalf of our city’s residents. Consider the events of the past several months: elected Republicans on both the city and the state level working together to balance the budget, dramatically increase education funding, employ new public safety initiatives, and unanimously approve the first phase of the most significant redevelopment project in Yonkers’ history.

The fruits of our efforts toward unity are obvious, but we cannot allow ourselves to forget where division has left us in the past: mired in confrontation and unable to move forward as a city. Nor can we forget that, as Republicans, we are outnumbered by a significant Democratic voter registration majority.

As Republicans, we must work together to ensure victory, and I’m proud to do my part. This year we have an exciting slate of candidates from the city of Yonkers, and I will be doing everything I can to ensure their victory this November.

For Yonkers this year, our political efforts must begin with reelecting Nick Spano to the State Senate. No one has been able to deliver more consistently for our city and our people than Senator Spano, and we cannot afford to lose him in Albany.

I am also pleased to welcome Mike Spano back to public service in his return bid to the State Assembly, and will pledge my full support for his candidacy as well. Let me also say a word of thanks to our departing State Assemblyman, Lou Mosiello who has served Yonkers well for many years at the county and state levels. We should all wish him well as he accepts an important appointment to the State Crime Victims Board.

We also have our work cut out for us in electing Republican challengers this year. Richard Hoffman and Jim Faulkner for US Congress, and Peter Kuper for Family Court can win with our help. Finally, the top race this year is for governor and I was pleased to endorse John Faso’s candidacy just this week. I know many of you agree that John Faso represents the absolute best hope for the future of our state in a post-Pataki era.

Continuing to work together will mean great things for us as a party and as a city. I look forward to seeing you at future ward meetings and at events around the city. Please come up and say hello!

Sincerely,
Phil Amicone

From the desk of . . .Senator Nick Spano
June 2006
Dear Friends,

As I’m sure you are aware, June 6
th marks the first day to circulate designating petitions to enable candidates to qualify for the upcoming November election.

Thanks to the help of dedicated leaders like you, I have previously had the honor of running for re-election to the New York State Senate. This year, I am confident that our hard working team will once again collect the appropriate number of signatures to allow my name to appear on the 2006 ballot.

I know that collecting petitions is a grueling process, and I want to make sure that you know just how much I appreciate all of the hard work that you do on my behalf.

In the State Capitol, I have been working on behalf of the people of Yonkers to enhance safety, reduce our local tax burden, guarantee a quality education for our students and make certain that state government is working efficiently for the people.

Recently, the Senate passed a bill named after 8-month old Cynthia Gibbs of Yonkers. She tragically died after being shaken by her caregiver in November of 2000. Since that time, I have been working hand in hand with her tenacious father, Daryl, so those who inflict harm upon children get the punishment they deserve.

Cynthia’s law makes it a crime to commit a reckless assault on a child that causes serious physical injury, even when depraved indifference cannot be proved. I am proud to report that the Assembly has also passed this legislation, and I look forward to putting this law on the books.

As always, I am here to serve you. If you have a question, a problem or want to share your views, please know that I am here to listen to your concerns and help you in anyway I can.

Best Regards,
NICK SPANO
Senator

Lou Mosiello appointed to State Crime Victims Board-Michael Spano to run for vacant Assembly Seat.
Governor George Pataki is appointing NYS Assemblyman Lou Mosiello to the State Crime Victims Board to fill a vacancy which has two and a half years left on a seven year term. Lou has announced that when his appointment is confirmed he will step down from his assembly seat.

Lou, a former police sergeant on the Town of Mamaroneck Police Department, served in the Westchester County Legislature for seven years before running for the New York State Assembly. We thank him for his service to our community and expect that in his new role he will continue to serve the interests of the people.

Michael Spano, who held the 93rd A. D. seat presently held by Mosiello for twelve years before stepping down two years ago, has announced that he will run to regain his old seat.

A MESSAGE FROM JIM FAULKNER,
CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE 17TH CD

A PUZZLER:
What do Lawrence Babbio, Thomas Bartlett, Jackson Goodwin Bennett, Kathleen Frankart, Katherine Linder, Karen McGuire, Edward McCraw, Randel Milch, Roger Mott, Daniel Petri, David Rosenzweig, Ivan Seidenberg, Craig Soloff, Thomas Tauke, Peter Thonis, Sandra Thorn, John Torre, Raymond Wierzbicki and Howard Wooley have in common? Here’s a hint. It has to do with the 17th Congressional District of New York.

THE ANSWER:
All nineteen of these people work for Verizon.
All are listed as donors to Eliot Engel’s current campaign. Together they have contributed over $20,000.00 to Eliot Engel’s current campaign. These contributions were made in 22 separate payments 17 of which were made on June 6th, 2005 and three more within the following week. (See Federal Election Commission website www.fec.gov/) This group is composed of the company president, fourteen vice-presidents, a public relations rep, an attorney, a manager and one unspecified. Verizon and Verizon’s “Good Government Club” have also donated a total of $10,000.00.

HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT?
With two exceptions
- Verizon President Ivan Seidenberg and one of his vice-presidents - none of these people live in the 17th N.Y. C.D. In fact they live in Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Long Island, Manhattan and other locations outside of the 17th C.D.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
These are the people who would influence Mr. Engel’s vote by their contributions. Verizon is a major player in the communications industry - telephone, cell phone, fiber optic and others. Passage of favorable legislation to protect both their present and future interests is extremely important to them. Can a legislator who receives over $30,000 from one company within an industry be objective and put the interests of his constituents ahead of those who would finance his campaign? Or are his contributors actually his “new” constituents?

And Verizon isn’t his only communications industry contributor. Sirius Radio President Mel Karmazin, who gives his address as New York, New York contributed $4,200.00. Graig Karmazin of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin and Good Karma Broadcasting also donated $4,200.00. Another $4,200.00 came from Theresa M. Karmazin of Paramus, New Jersey who lists her occupation as “Homemaker”. That’s a total of $12,600.00 from the Karmazins, none of whom list an address in the 17th C.D.

Of $216,000.00 in Eliot’s individual contributions posted on the FEC website as of 6/1/06, $22,000 came from California, $24,000 from New Jersey, $29,000 from Manhattan, $11,750 from New Jersey, $7,500 from Virginia, $2,750 from Maryland. In fact, less than 13.9% of the individual contributions listed came from within the 17th C.D.
